CHAPTER 18

Arch’s headlights flash across the observatory parking lot as he pulls into a spot. He’s quickly followed by Kenji, Finley, and Bear in each of their cars. The last to rumble through the lot is Adam, with Valerie on the back of his Harley.

I roll my eyes. Well, now I know why he didn’t show up.

Trey leans in and asks, “You good?”

I nod.

My friends pour out of the cars and gather around us. Looks like Trey’s phone call to Arch was taken seriously. Trey’s leaning on the stone railing with his arm draped around my shoulders.

My gaze cuts to Adam. “Can I speak with you?”

Adam nods, and Trey lets me go.

Adam and I cross to the opposite side of the lot, where I stop and turn to him. I raise my eyebrows expectantly, but he does nothing more than look confused.

I roll my eyes. “Date? Tonight? You and me? You stood me up?”

Awareness floods his expression. “Shit. I’m so sorry, Melanie. I got sidetracked.”

“Sidetracked? Is that what we’re calling Valerie now? She’ll love that.”

He grimaces. After a long pause, he offers, “I’ll have Arch take Valerie home and make tonight up to you.”

A sarcastic chuckle bubbles up and escapes my mouth. “You’re a completely vibrant shithead. You’re intoxicating, but you’ve got a lot to learn about the effects of toying with people.”

I turn on my heel and walk off before he has a chance to respond. When I rejoin the group, I squeeze past Bear and Darren on my way to Trey. The two side-eye each other, sensing that I’m irritable.

Trey reaches out a hand to me, and the moment we touch, the irritation is replaced with a wave of contentment. God help me. I need time to work through this with him. I’ve never felt this safe, and yet somehow I find it terrifying.

As if to answer my thought, Trey murmurs, “We’ll talk about it, but I promise you’re okay. I’m not going anywhere.”

Softly, so no one else can hear, I whisper, “How did you know—”

He places a finger to my lips and then drops his hand, lacing his fingers through mine. A pulse rolls through his hands and into me. It’s almost like an energy-emotion bubble. It’s not really a thought in words, more like a three-dimensional feeling. My eyes widen a touch when I realize the bubble carries layers of me being his. I meet his gaze, and his lips curl with the slightest smile.

One of the guys clears his throat. When I look up, Bear is grinning at me.

“That didn’t take long,” he says with a wink. “I see you found the guy we talked about.”

When I grin, he gives a knowing nod.

“Why don’t you two fill us in on why we’re here?” Bear says. “Then we can leave you to your exciting soulmate connection.”

Adam looks questioningly at Bear, who shrugs. Adam is clearly agitated, and he shoots Trey a nasty glare. Trey meets it, unflinching, as he pulls me against him with my back to his chest.
